چکیده
The application of the fixation and staining technique developed by one of us (Papanicolaou)’.2 in the study of sputum for cancer cells was first used by us June 22, 1945. The material was procured from a patient whose symptoms were those of a man who was discharged from the United States Navy in April 1945 as a psychoneurotic. His routine chest plate was reported as negative. He had a chronic, so-called “tobacco” cough, anorexia, insomnia, restlessness, nervousness and weight loss. On June 5th, 1945 he coughed up a small quantity of blood and a chest x-ray examination revealed an infiltrative lesion in the right upper lobe with nodes along the right mediastinal border. Bronchoscopy and bronchial washings were negative. Sputum smears showed typical cancer cells. Subsequent exploratory operation revealed an Inoperable bronchogenic carcinoma (Figures 1, 2 and 3). Since the above date, over 1,300 cases have been studied. The specimens were procured primarily from patients of the New York Hospital and the Memorial Hospital. A monograph is now under preparation in which a description of the cystologic findings and a statistical analysis of the diagnostic accuracy of this method will be given. In a tabulation of 298 cases already reported in the American Journal of Public Health,3 the accuracy was approximately 95 per cent for the positive reports (Classes IV and V) t and 85 per cent for the negative (Classes I and II). Of the cases reported as suspicious (Class III), approximately 50 per cent proved subsequently to be positive.

Determination of Soluble HER-2/neu (sHER-2/neu) in Iranian Patients with Lung Cancer
Background: The HER-2/neu gene is located on chromosome 17q21 and encodes a 185-kDa transmembrane glycoprotein with tyrosine kinase activity reported to be released in soluble form in various malignancies. Objective: To evaluate the clinical significance of soluble Her-2/neu as a diagnostic marker in lung cancer. Methods: Serum levels of soluble HER-2/neu were measured in 43 patients with lung ...
متن کاملComparing the effect of the order of cell Collection for Pap Smear on the results of cytologic Diagnosis
Background: World wide, Cervical cancer comprises 12% of all cancers in women. In developed countries, routine cervical cytology tests resulted in a large decline in cervical cancer incidence. This study is a descriptive- analytical research to evaluate the order of cell sampling from exocervix and endocervix and compare final cytological diagnosis. Materials and methods: Totally, 1129 smears ...

Background & Aims: Breast cancer is the most common cancer in woman which includes 25% of all cancers in woman.Biopsy is the gold standard method for diagnosis of breast messes but since about 70% of the breast masses are bengin, non-invasive diagnostic methods including FNA are more useful and important. Here we decide to compare the results of FNA with biopsy of palpable breast masses in pat...
متن کاملSHOX2 and WT1 Promoter Methylation Correlates with the Lung Cancer in Iranian Patients
Lung cancer is among the most common cause of cancer death in the world. Since the disease is diagnosed in the middle or late stages of the cancer development a more efficient method for an early diagnosis of the disease is required. The main goal of this study was to investigate the correlation between aberrant promoter methylation of the two genes: SHOX2(Short stature homeobox 2) and WT1(Wilm...

Background and purpose: Several studies have been carried out on re-cut and de-stained sections regarding prostate biopsies and cytologic specimens of squamous cell carcinoma. However, few studies on lung biopsy are done. Due to small size of lung biopsies and for the prevention of lung rebiopsy, in this study P63 staining intensity between re-cut and de-stained slides of patients, specimens ...
متن کاملDetection of lung cancer using CT images based on novel PSO clustering
Lung cancer is one of the most dangerous diseases that cause a large number of deaths. Early detection and analysis can be very helpful for successful treatment. Image segmentation plays a key role in the early detection and diagnosis of lung cancer. K-means algorithm and classic PSO clustering are the most common methods for segmentation that have poor outputs. In t...
